As we all should know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Collaborating Organization, approximately one in eight women living in America will have breast cancer at some point in their life. Reports state that many women who are diagnosed with breast cancer did not get checkups because they did not feel the symptoms. This is why a lot of organizations are promoting the idea that women should do monthly self-examinations. The debate continues about whether or not women older than 40 years of age should get yearly mammograms or not. Studies have found that women who were diagnosed with breast cancer earlier are more likely to defeat it.
One breast cancer walk that happens annually in New York City in September is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This organization is one of the most well-known for raising awareness for breast cancer.
I have personally gotten involved in the movement to raise awareness and money. I started my participation in these walks when I was 8 years old, and I am now in my first year of university. My grandmother and mother were both diagnosed with breast cancer, so I find it really important to participate in organizations that promote breast cancer awareness.
