“My main goal is to inform and educate the viewers,” said Kerry Hines, founder of the HaiRadio Broadcast Network. “We talk about beauty, hair vendors throughout the city, music and hot topics.”
Hines will be hosting the fifth annual LIVE Hair & Beauty Show at the Black Spectrum Theatre complex in Jamaica, Queens Monday, Oct. 9. This show will be an all-day event, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. At the venue, there will be beauty industry workshops, exhibitors, competitions, panel discussions, vendors and more. Guest speakers include cosmetologist Edith Younger and hairstylist and business guru Shivonne Richards.
Hines told the Amsterdam News, “The purpose of the hair expo is to educate people about healthy hair care. Regardless of where the individual is on the hair spectrum. Whether you are a professional, entrepreneur or an enthusiast, it is important for them to be well-informed about hair. What makes the Hair Nation Expo from other expos is that we cater to everyone.”
Fashion designers, cosmetologists, beauty bloggers and nail technicians are also welcome. “Not only is this event for people to be educated about hair, it is also for people to network with others and promote their businesses,” said Hines.
The event is expected to be recorded for several radio and television programs. “Although we are mainly focusing on the information we are giving to our attendees this year, there will also be entertainment,” said Hines. “The eminent DJ Enferno will be at the event.” DJ Enferno is well-known in D.C. clubs and as a tour DJ for Madonna. “We hope to cater to a bigger audience compared to our previous expos. Last year, we had more than 300 attendees. We are expecting to have a lot of engaging activities that this will make this our best year yet.”
Thando “Loc Star” Kafele, Jabril Wajid and Darrius Peace will be on a panel discussing the importance of having males in the hair industry. They will also be receiving Hair Nation 2017 Expo’s Future Leaders of Tomorrow Award along with others.
Hines is originally from Philadelphia, but he moved to New York City in 2001. “I been here so long I feel as if I was born in New York,” he said. “I just love that New York energy, especially when I moved to Brooklyn.”
For more than 20 years, Hines has worked as a beautician. He has hosted numerous workshops and expos throughout New York State and New Jersey and in Atlanta and Philadelphia. He also had a HaiRadio show that was first launched in 1995, on WNJR in Newark, N.J. Eventually, the show was aired in Atlanta, New York and Philadelphia. The radio show discussed beauty and hair tips from local and prominent beauticians. But he had to take a break from the radio show because of financial issues. “I didn’t want to take a break, but it was necessary,” he said. “But I am glad that since it’s relaunched in 2012, HaiRadio has been flourishing and is continuing to do well.”
In January 2016, the radio show became a morning broadcast. Since then, “The HaiRadio Morning Show” has been broadcast more than 300 times. “I am always open to have local entrepreneurs and beauticians to come on my show,” said Hines. “We also feature some of my famous clients and celebrity stylists like the former First Lady Michelle Obama’s hairstylist and Beyoncé’s dad.”
The show airs during the weekdays, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., on the HaiRadio website.
Hines plans on hosting bigger events within the next year. “I am in the works of hosting seasonal hair shows, having a midyear vendor event and having my own television show,” he said.
Hines also runs a marketing and client service promotion company. The company specializes in hair and beauty publicity, marketing and promotion. The company has an online store that features the products discussed on HaiRadio.
