A No. 1 ranked player, Rafael Nadal proved that he is the No. 1. Four American women reached the singles U.S. Open semifinals for the first time since 1981. Three were African-American: U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens, her first U.S. Open championship; U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys; and two-time U. S. Open singles champion Venus Williams (also a two-time doubles champion), who lost to Stephens in the semifinals. Joining Stephens, Keys and Williams was CoCo Vandeweghe, also a first time semifinalist. Vandeweghe was defeated by Keys in their semifinals match.
Also of note was this season’s U.S. Open Sportsmanship Awards. This year’s awardees were Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) and Petra Kvitová (Czech Republic). The U.S. Open Sportsmanship Award winners receive trophies and $5,000 donations to the charities of their choice.
There was close to a 40 percent increase in American player participation in the U. S. Open’s main draw and qualifying tournaments since the 2013 season, and 20 of the 24 U.S. Open sessions were sellouts. The total attendance this season was 691,143 on the grounds of the U.S. Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
