Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, Sisters Building Sisters in Brooklyn walked through East New York, Brooklyn, for their Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence. Sisters Building Sisters in Brooklyn is a growing nonprofit organization that works to empower women and girls in underserved communities, and every year they also walk with and through the Brooklyn community in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Rosalyn McIntosh is co-founder with her daughter Nyasha Rivera and community activists such as Joyce Scott-Brayboy. The group says that domestic violence against both women and men is a big issue that is often hidden from even family members. “When we walk through the community, people just join us and chant with us as we walk—‘Love should not hurt,’” said McIntosh. “We will not tolerate it. It is unacceptable that one in every four women and one in every seven men has experienced some form of domestic violence, but relatively few cases are reported. So we march, and we work together in the streets, schools, churches and anywhere we are invited to speak to say that we must take a stand against this abuse.”
