At the Westbeth Gallery at 55 Bethune St., Brooklyn, N.Y., an extraordinary exhibit features beautiful quilt designs. Jacquelynn Jones, a member of a quilt guild, is one of many NYC artists exhibiting in the show. The Westbeth Gallery’s quilt exhibit ends this Saturday, Oct. 28. Viewing time is now through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Westbeth is an arts community that offers artists affordable housing and space to create. The gallery features photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings, fine arts and multimedia. For this special quilting exhibition, quilts have come off beds, couches, chairs and walls to be showcased.
There are great stories about quilting. The word “quilt” stems from a Latin “culicita.” It is actually a three-layer stitched fabric with stuffing in the middle. Quilts are noted for their warmth, and many are large and elaborate in design. They are often used as wall hangings. Stop in at the Westbeth Gallery and view the various quilt design.
At New York Fashion Week, the China Fashion Collective showed an exceptional spring/summer runway collection. They returned with China’s top bridal designer, Tsai Meiyue, and their new couture darling, Vancy Law. Declared one of the most famous Chinese designers, she won the Mercedes-Benz Chinese Fashion Week’s Top Ten Designers Award for three consecutive years. In this collection, Tsai has redefined Chinese craftsmanship with her meticulously finished pieces that are modern reinterpretations of traditional Chinese wedding-wear. This season, her collection casts light on the ancient art of min xin, an embroidery technique that is native to southern China, from where she hails.
Law opened Wuban’s first couture atelier in 2009 after graduating from Esmod. Since then, she has been featured frequently in Chinese fashion media for her eveningwear. Her silhouettes are timeless. In details, there were intricate, hand-finished couture accents. Today, her designs are loved by Chinese celebrities. Her spring/summer ’18 collection, aptly titled Jardin Nuage, attempted to capture the ephemeral beauty of clouds at twilight. Her gowns were marvelous!
