One of the best days of the US Open is Community Day, a complimentary, admission free day for all of those who attend. Competitive matches and action packed activities are on the Opens schedule held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, across from Citifield.

This year it’s being held on Thursday, September 6th. Admission begins at 11am. You’ll be able to watch some of the best players in the world, up close, from men’s and women’s doubles to mixed doubles competition. You’ll also see future stars compete in singles and doubles junior events, as well as the quads and doubles divisions of the wheelchair competition.

While on the grounds of the Tennis Center, guests will have access to all of the field courts plus the unreserved sections of the Grandstand and Louis Armstrong Stadium. The incredibly large television monitors on the front of Arthur Ashe Stadium by the fountain and the one near Armstrong will surely feature the back-to-back women’s singles semifinal matches also on today”s schedule.

There’s also the possibility of seeing world class players practicing for their upcoming match or walking around, hanging out, or signing autographs. Also, there’s the possibility of seeing a celebrity or two. Wanda Sykes, Mike Tyson, Sophie Turner, the Jonas Brothers, Ben Stiller, Spike Lee, Former Mayor David Dinkins, Former President Bill Clinton, Steve Kerr, Adam Silver, Frieda Pinto and Kurt Russell have taken in matches thus far. When exiled NFL players Colin Kapernick and Eric Reid were shown on the four mega screens inside Ashe Stadium giving the black power salute while chilling in one of the suites on Friday night, they each received a hugely rousing applause of approval from the 23,000 plus fans in the building.

This is the 50th anniversary of the US Open. A record setting crowd of 199,187 purchased tickets for this past Labor Day weekend, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, a US Open Labor Day Weekend attendance record. 61,962 had tickets for Monday, Labor Day.

Players, Roger Federer, Venus Williams Maria Sharapova and Sloan Stephens, the defending women’s single champion, some of the tennis elite, have been eliminated already from competition, but men’s defending champion Rafael Nadal, who has played in several of the Open’s most competitive matches these last two weeks is still in it. So is Williams’ younger sister Serena, Madison Keys and Novak Djokovic.

Players are battling to compete in the US Open championships this weekend. The women’s singles chip on Saturday, the men’s championship on Sunday.
