Gerard Koala, the coordinator of the FONY festival, told the Amsterdam News that this FONY festival was created in 2015, and its goal is to promote Burkina Faso and African culture in the USA. He added that City Council Member Bill Perkins has been a “strong supporter of the FONY festival since Day One.”

He added, “That’s the reason why we the organizers with the minister of culture of Burkina Faso decided to hold a musical stage in Harlem to honor him. At this occasion the government of Burkina Faso invited him officially to Ouagadougou in February next at the 50th anniversary of the FESPACO Film Festival.”

At the event were the government officials Ardim Traore, the minister of culture; Appoliniare Ouedraogo, vice consul; and Mariam Fofana, vice ambassador of Burkina Faso at the United Nations.
