The New American Chamber Commerce is set to host the Chicks, Cupcakes and Coffee event. Friday, Oct. 19, women will gather over cupcakes and coffee to discuss breast cancer. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. It will be held in Downtown Brooklyn at 26 Court St., Suite 701.
“Come on!” said Pearl Phillip, president of New American Chamber of Commerce. “Chicks, Cupcakes and Coffee. How can one not smile at that cute chick [baby chicken] in the promotional flyer?”
She added, “On a serious note, this is a get together. This is an informal gathering of women, and hopefully, we will have a few men meeting and sharing experiences and learning from each other. Our speakers run the gamut of persons whose family members experienced breast cancer or are survivors, enthusiastic experts in their field excited to share information, give advice and support.”
The event is free to the public. A $5 donation is optional. The NACC will partner with various organizations for the event.
Many women are in different stages in their struggles with breast cancer, which is why the event aims to address those issues.
“For the women who are currently fighting cancer, one of our speakers will talk about a program that helps you meet your financial commitments while obviously being unable to work,” said Phillip. “And for women who have conquered cancer, we are going to be discussing getting your groove back. Being back to the new and improved you.”
Understanding can give a women power in the fight against breast cancer.
“I subscribe to the maxim, ‘knowledge is power,’ and one of my most quoted verses, Hosea: 4:6 states, ‘My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.’” said Phillip. “I can’t save everyone, but I can at least try to save one person or make a difference, and hope and pray for the multiplier effect.”
Advancements have been made on breast cancer, but Phillip believes there is a long way to go.
“We need to get a damn cure, so much money raised and research for so long,” said Phillip. “We can send a man to the moon. It’s time. We also need to make treatment more affordable; focus even more on early detection and prevention. Start preparing our girls in their teens with lifestyle habits which will make the statistics decrease and not increase.”
Empowering women and their mindset on breast cancer are the main goal of the gathering.
“I want women to know that they are in charge and responsible for their bodies,” said Phillip. “I want women to know that cancer is a challenge which can be prevented and defeated. I want women to know that there is help, there is support. I want women to have the ‘it takes a village mentality.’ Share the information with someone else, be your sister’s keeper. We have a powerful opening message from Serena Williams, which will hopefully give that push.”
The most important word in the battle against breast cancer is fight.
“Come on!” said Phillip. “We can fight. Let’s fight like girls and defeat this.”
