City Council Member Robert E. Cornegy unveiled a scale model of a statue of legendary Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm that will be installed in Brower Park next year.
Cornegy held a news conference in Brooklyn Monday for the unveiling and was joined by other elected officials, representatives from the Crown Heights North Association, Community Board 8, Friends of Brower Park, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and others.
Also in attendance was renowned African-American artist Sterling Brown, who will design the statue in conjunction with the Crown Heights North Association.
The announcement was part of Cornegy’s community cultural initiative to promote the history of people of color from District 36 by erecting statues of them throughout the district.
Chisholm will be the first of four individuals slated to receive statues in their honor. Each statue will commemorate an iconic person of color who made significant contributions to the Bedford-Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights communities.
