From the global fashion collective, there were eight designers that put their best fashions forward for fall/winter 2019 at Pier 59 in New York City. Faun by Marisa Clark led the show with a timeless ready-to-wear line; their clothes were whimsical with an exciting play on colors. There were pops of cobalt blue and burgundy that fit perfectly with more muted pink and green tones featured in the collection. Fabrics were in rich jewel tones. In details, there were elegant necklines, fluttering hems that effortlessly complemented intricate handcrafted pieces, such as intricate gold antlers and pearl bralettes.
Naissance, designed by Canadian designer Kirsten Ley, is an artistic collection. The line represents the birth and re-birth of an official French fashion house. The color palette features metallic blue with Ley’s signature crisp oxblood softened by whimsical cream colors. She offers a sculpting technique that shows in her deep, leather purple skirt worn with an asymmetrical top in layered organza.
With a fresh take on tradition, Chinese brand ERX! X MRHUA presented a quirky unisex collection for fall/winter ’19. The line, called “Silk Road Beijing Beijing,” tells a story with ornate embroidery of traditional Chinese New Year symbols. Colors are vibrant, including lemon yellow, silver, red and candy pink.
Another Canadian brand, M.E., showed a collection of unique femininity in black and white. Designer Michelle Elizabeth was inspired by fashion in its highest state. One of the highlights was a black long-length winter coat with white edging, fitting beautifully at the waist in a flattering cut.
Queenie Zoe by Bomin Kim was inspired by Samiljeol (Independence Movement Day in Korea) and the start of modernization for Korean women. There were a series of gorgeous gowns in bold, feminine styles. Designer Tong Li for China-based brand HIGHTLI was inspired by a video game. Fabrics included herringbone, checks, dogtooth for added texture, and a bold, red fur coat that created volume with oversized sleeves.
On a smoke-filled runway, Suncun created both adults and children’s clothing. Dragon motifs, metallic embroidery and mandarin collars evoked a sense of the East. Designer Yan Zhang integrated cultural elements with contemporary styling for fall ’19.
Smiling children clad in silk slippers brought the collection to life. They illustrated lively and carefree aspects of childhood that have inspired Zhang this season. Boy’s looks featured tunics that were paired with silk pants and robes. Girls were fitted in whimsical gowns with soft flowing trains, shimmering fabrics, and ornate embellishments that glimmered in the light.
