For Anthony Joshua, his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. couldn’t come fast enough. He made sure the outcome was different this past Saturday night.
Joshua roundly defeated Ruiz Jr. in a unanimous decision in front of almost 15,000 people at Diriyah Stadium in Saudi Arabia. In the process, Ruiz lost his WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF heavyweight titles. United States judge Glen Feldman and Canadian judge Benoit Russell both scored the fight at 118-110 for Joshua. British judge Steve Gray scored it 119-109 for Joshua.
The main theme leading up to the fight was Ruiz Jr.’s weight. He showed up to the ring out of shape weighing at 283 pounds. He admitted to spending his month after the upset partying instead of training.
Ruiz Jr. shocked the boxing world and became a folk hero earlier this year when he knocked out Joshua. His size and his look made him seem like the everyman who landed a golden punch to knock off a giant.
But Saturday night was about Joshua. He told reporters that this year showed he knows that there’s a thin line between winning and losing and he’s ready for both results.
“Every time I step in the ring, sometimes maybe I take a loss,” said Joshua during his post-fight press conference. “But I prepare myself for it.”
When asked what he admired about Ruiz, Joshua spoke of his quiet demeanor while being true to himself.
“I think belief is important,” said Joshua of Ruiz. “He believes in himself. He’s very humble outside of the ring. Most people who are humble outside of the ring are definitely a threat inside of the ring. I don’t think they need to fake a character or build up an ego.”
When asked what he regretted about this fight when compared to the last fight, Ruiz said that he held back during certain moments when he shouldn’t have.
“I think just the heart that I have…I’m not scared of any of my opponents,” said Ruiz to reporters. “I think if I just let my hands go like I did on June 1, I think I would’ve won. I should’ve trained harder. I should’ve listened to my coaches more and maybe I should’ve not put on all this weight like I did.”
But Ruiz Jr. is already gearing up for his next potential battle with Joshua.
“I won one. He won one,” said Ruiz. “And we’re gonna go to a third one.”
