Visual Artist Iman Essiet is curating a cultural event to kick off the 2020 Census Check Black Campaign. The event is geared toward educating the Black community on the importance of not only filling out the Census, but most importantly the significance of checking Black.

The event takes place on Monday, March 16 from 6-9 p.m., at Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration, 1368 Fulton Street in Brooklyn.

Visual and performing art will be used as a tool to educate and bring together the culture and community on the issue of the Census.

Javaka Steptoe, award-winning illustrator and author, will be the emcee. Confirmed speakers include NYC Deputy Mayor J. Philip Thompson, Dr. Brenda M. Greene of the Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College, and Lurie Favors of the Center for Law and Social Justice, Medgar Evers.

Grammy-nominated spoken-word performance artist Gha’il Rhodes will perform. Visual artists on display will include Ambria Safford, Amberrose Venus Garden, Daphne Mia Essiet, Phillip Angel Yeldell, and IreMayowa Olopade.
