NYC Parks workers could be seen power washing walls, painting benches in the Pan African colors of red, black and green, and planting rows of new trees along the newly established “Juneteenth Grove” at Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza Park this past Juneteenth (June 19, 2020). The Parks workers efforts were finished just in time, as crowds of protesters arrived in Downtown Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza later that afternoon to take it over for a Juneteenth celebration/Black Lives Matter protest which lasted far into the evening. “Juneteenth Grove” is the first of several parks that NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver has promised to rename in honor of Black Americans in every NYC borough by Nov. 2, which is “Black Solidarity Day.”
