Grammy Award-winning rapper Common joined a star-studded lineup of performers at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre on December 11 to aid Children in Conflict (CIC), a non-profit organization that supports children affected by war. Common was joined by performers including Natasha Bedingfield, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, and Mon Rovia at the Brooklyn Theater to raise awareness and funds for the organization.

Led by Executive Director Kim McCall, Children in Conflict, launched at the Global Citizen Festival in 2017, supports “emergency protection, education, mental health support, and community advocacy,” for children displaced or affected by war, according to their website. CIC currently has boots on the ground in a dozen countries, and is supporting efforts in Gaza, Ukraine, and more. A limited number of discounted tickets were available to NYU and LIU students ahead of the show, and fans connected to Gotham Casting were granted access to free “seat-filler” tickets. Fans gradually packed out the historic, recently renovated space to dance and sing to classic jams, and advocate for the future of the world. McCall took to the mic in between standout performances to address their work, citing the need for educational and recreational resources in war-affected regions “so kids can just be kids,” McCall explained to the audience. This sentiment was echoed by all onstage, including surprise special guest Keegan-Michael Key, who appeared after a powerful set by Bedingfield that had audience members singing along to “Unwritten” at the top of their lungs. “We are here for the children, who deserve safety, love and joy,” Key told the audience who met the comedian with rousing applause. Soon after, headliner Common took to the stage to deliver a set of throwback classics and pieces that reflect on the challenges facing society today. “In New York, we take care of each other,” he exclaimed.
