Alert! The other day during a press conference Trump stated a truth, so write it down. He actually shaped his pursed lips and said, “I am not a doctor.” Well, whatta you know?
This is hardly news. We have known all along, though he may have been under some sort of delusion, that he was not a doctor––nor is he the leader we’ve been looking for in these troubled times.
Of course, as soon as he confessed that he wasn’t a doctor he had to modify it by saying, “But I have common sense.” His sense is neither common nor evident. Then, as if to further defend his promotion of a drug that no one in the medical community has endorsed––save his own lackeys––he announced, “What do you have to lose?”
We can see why State Rep. Tavia Galonski of Ohio is referring his behavior to The Hague and accusing him of “crimes against humanity.” Like Rep. Galonski, many Americans are totally fed up with Trump’s thoughtless decisions, and the more recent ones have been of no assistance to those now suffering through the COVID-19, to say nothing of those already deceased.
“What do you have to lose?” should be more than enough for Americans to join Rep. Galonski in her pursuit. In fact, it’s a charge that should have been made long ago, even though the impeachment was an attempt in that direction.
One of the things we certainly would like to lose is the presence of Trump occupying the Oval Office, or standing behind the podium pontificating about things he knows nothing about. We tolerated some of his dismissals, considering the source. Many of those moves we knew were based on his attempt to evaporate every vestige of the Obama administration. One wag suggested that if we really wanted Trump to be more aggressive on flattening the coronavirus curve, he should say Obama created it.
As we approach the apex of the virus, our anxiety is not lessened by Trump’s proposed remedies. They bring neither comfort nor release from danger, and, much to our dismay, his way of dealing with the problem only worsens the situation, expands our dilemma.
Perhaps in the days ahead we may have a new mantra, “What do you have to lose?” sounds like a good replacement for Make America Great Again—Trump Must Go!
