Cheers for Rev. Al Sharpton, who was saluted on his 72nd birthday earlier in October with a rousing speech by Mayor Mamdani at the National Action Network (NAN) House of Justice in Harlem, may resound even louder at Harlem’s historic Alhambra Ballroom on Oct. 23. The NAN founder will have a chance to smell the roses once more, when he will be honored by the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) with its Legacy in Civil Rights and Media at its Sneaker Ball & Awards Ceremony.
Sharpton will share the podium with Tiffany Cross, journalist and media personality, as a speaker, and radio personality Lenny Green serving as co-host. A’ndre Davis, producer and star of the stage production “Man of the House,” will join the presenters.
The event will be a grand opportunity for younger NYABJ members to mingle and munch with veteran journalists, activists, and community leaders whom Sharpton symbolizes.
During a recent interview, “the Rev” put the upcoming midterm elections in historical context, noting that the “marches in the past were the first stages that led to the galvanizing of the movement. The recent ‘No Kings’ rally energizes people, and this is the same thing that galvanized and energized our movement. If you study history, you will see that’s always been the pattern.”
Tickets for the gala can be acquired online through Eventbrite or by contacting NYABJ President Cynthia Horner at cynthia@nyabj.org or president@nyabj.org.
