The Friends of Education of the Museum of Modern Art will present a “Series of Conversations Among Friends” on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Theater 3 at MoMA, located at 4 W. 54th St. Doors will open at 6:45 for the 7 p.m. program, which will be followed by a reception at 8:15.
The featured guests are Ralph Lemon, dancer, chorographer, writer and visual artist; and Fred Moten, author, poet and professor.
Kathy Halbreich, MoMA associate director, will introduce the evening’s program, which opens with an introduction to Lemon’s work-in-progress, “Scaffold Room,” a performance-lecture-musical featuring Lemon, Okwui Okpokwasili and guests. A conversation between Lemon and Moten will ensue, with the centerpiece targeting the artists’ work and its relationship to music, art and dance.
Lemon’s performance work was presented at MoMA last January, in conjunction with the exhibition “On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century.” He also co-organized “Some Sweet Day,” a program of dance performances by six internationally acclaimed choreographers, which will be presented Oct. 15 through Nov. 4 at MoMA.
Moten is a professor of modern poetry at Duke University and the author of “In the Break: The Aesthetics of the Black Radical Tradition.” Slated for release are his forthcoming titles “The Feel Trio” (Letter Machine Editions) and “When One Consents Not to Be a Single Being” (Duke University Press).
An intimate reception catered by Fantasy Fare will take place in the Cullman Mezzanine following the program. In this informal setting, guests are invited to meet Lemon and Moten and continue the conversation with them and their other guests.
Tickets for this event is $35 and can be purchased at the Museum Information and Film Desks, online at MoMA.org, or through the Friends of Education office.
