It’s Black history month: one month out of the year when we take the time to retell the stories of the heroes of our past and further examine their respective achievements. So the NAACP’s annual campaign, “Unsung Heroes,” seeks to uncover new stories about African Americans who are making differences in their own communities now.
“Your unsung hero may be fighting for economic or criminal justice — equitable education or affordable health care — or fighting to ensure our voting rights,” NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous said in a statement. “I know there are many more people like this out there, and I want to hear about them.”
This will be the fourth year that the NAACP has conducted the “Unsung Heroes” campaign. Since the launching of this year’s campaign on February 1, they have collected over 100 stories ranging from church bishops, war veterans, and local politicians. All submitted stories are viewable on their website.
