Friday, Nov. 21, more than 100 people and families who live on 128th Street between St. Nicholas Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard were able to scratch the turkey off their Thanksgiving shopping list. That’s because Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E., which has its headquarters located on that street, gave turkeys to its neighbors who reside on the block to help provide a happy Thanksgiving.
The giveaway, co-sponsored by Manna’s Restaurant, Fairway Supermarket and Bravo Supermarket, is part of the ongoing support that Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. provides to those in the community who have lost children to gun violence and to the greater Harlem community at large.
“We want to take back our community block by block by continuing to work to get guns off the streets, but also it’s important to take care of each other as a family when they need. We hope that this can be an example for those throughout Harlem and New York City to look out for our neighbors. This turkey giveaway is one way we can support our neighbors who need a little help to have a happy Thanksgiving and continue on and be uplifted in their day-to-day life,” says Jackie Rowe-Adams, co-founder, Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E.
Betty Park, owner of Mannas Restaurant and member of the Community Affairs unit of the 32nd Precinct, joined the members of Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. in giving the turkeys to those from the neighborhood who lined up outside the organization’s offices.
