On the evening of Thursday, Oct. 8, Acting Supreme Court Judge Reginald Boddie visited Harlem to talk about the law in a free and open discussion that was the first in a series of “Law Nights” at the historic Mt. Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church, located at 15 Mt. Morris Park West, on the corner of West 122nd Street, across the street from Marcus Garvey Park. (This Harlem church is where tenant organizer Jesse Grey held his meetings in the 1950s.)

The series is entitled “The People and the Law.” Boddie, who was once a legal services attorney operating out of the Harlem Legal Services Office, then on West 125th Street, provided an overview of the civil courts and took questions from the audience.
As noted on NYCourts.gov, “The Civil Court of the City of New York has jurisdiction over civil cases involving amounts up to $25,000 and other civil matters referred to it by the Supreme Court. It includes a small claims part for informal dispositions of matters not exceeding $5,000 and a landlord and tenant-housing part for landlord-tenant matters of unlimited amounts and housing code violations.”
North Manhattan residents clearly seek relief and redress, in overwhelming numbers, in these civil courts.
