Saturday, June 4, filmmaker Spike Lee hosted a huge birthday party for Prince, who died suddenly April 21, 2016. Hundreds of Prince’s fans dressed up in purple everything and showed up to enjoy the music and dance. Celebrity DJ and host Sway kept the party going. People from the very young to grandparents enjoyed the free party, celebrating what would have been Prince Rogers Nelson’s 58th birthday (June 7). The Rev. Al Sharpton took the mic and spoke words of celebration for both Prince and Muhammad Ali, who died the night before. There were no tears, but there were lots of happy faces and joyful dancing to all of the famed singer’s greatest hits, such as “Purple Rain” and “1999.” Lee promised the Amsterdam News that there would be lots of “purple fun,” and there was. It was lit.
