Outdoor music event Sundae Sermon is commemorating 10 years with a special celebration Sunday, Aug. 12.

2018 marks the 10th year of Sundae Sermon directed by DJ Stormin’ Norman (aka Norman McHugh) a celebration of community, dance and music appreciation of Disco, Funk, Soul, Old School Hip Hop, Reggae, Soulful Deep and Afro House. For the the 10th anniversary, Sundae Sermon will return to its beginning location – St. Nicholas Park.

Community residents are being treated to a five-hour dance-a-thon encompassing live DJ sets by Stormin’ Norman with special guests DJ Cosi (the FREEDOM party,) DJ Sabine and special guests Courtney Roze on djembe drum from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

McHugh started “Sundae Sermon” in Harlem, getting the idea after going to various music parties around the city and seeing the African Day Parade in Harlem. With very few outdoor music events for Harlmites at the time, he stepped up to the plate.

With the help of sponsors including Uptown and Vibe magazines and Bikram Yoga of East Harlem, “Sundae Sermon” has gone from an attendance of 50 people to crowds of hundreds from around the city. Listeners who go to the event are as diverse as the music that is played.

The name “Sundae Sermon,” Norman says, comes from the feeling people get when they hear grooves forcing them to dance, similar to being moved by religion in church.
