Chef Carl Steven Redding, best known as the founder, owner and head chef of Amy Ruth’s restaurant in Harlem, has died.

The cause of death has not been announced. Redding was a type-2 diabetic. His right leg was amputated below the knee in 2017.

A spokesperson said on a GoFundMe page set up for Redding that he “fell on hard times, and had extreme financial difficulty. He had a hard time making ends meet on a day to day basis. He never stopped advocating for himself as well as others. His last days were very painful because he complained that he had no heat and hot water.”

Family and friends are asking for donations via GoFundMe to give Redding a proper homegoing service.

Is this the former owner of Redding’s Restaurant in Atlanta City? If so, my late husband and I met him there and he was truly a gem of a human being. So sorry 😢

  10. Mr Gregg Redding,
So sorry about Carl. I missed the service but was there in spirit. Carl was a larger than life character for those who really knew him. His passion for Amy Ruth’s drew us all in. But God had another plan for him. Condolences from the Harris family. Praying for your peace and understanding.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

  11. I got to know Carl because he was staying in the same apartment as my mother. I took him fishing last year to thank him for his service. So, glad I did. He will sorely be missed.
