As the state senator representing Brooklyn’s 21st District and chair of the Senate Energy & Telecommunications Committee, I have a duty to protect the interests of my constituents, especially the vibrant Haitian community –– the largest in the United States –– that calls our district home. Recent actions by Elon Musk and President Donald Trump have posed direct threats to these communities, and it’s time we address them head-on.

Elon Musk: A Detriment to Our Values and Economy

Elon Musk, once hailed as a tech visionary, has revealed himself as a figure whose actions and alliances are deeply troubling. Significant controversies, including union-busting tactics, racial discrimination lawsuits, and a blatant disregard for worker rights have marred his leadership of Tesla. These issues are not just ethical concerns; they have tangible economic repercussions.

That is why I joined my colleagues in the State Senate to call on Comptroller Tom DiNapoli to divest our state pension fund from Tesla and other Elon Musk-linked companies. Our letter to Comptroller DiNapoli emphasized that “Tesla’s long-term stability, corporate governance, and exposure to political, legal, and reputational risk” make it an unworthy investment.

Tesla’s stock has been on a downward spiral, reflecting the company’s instability. As of April 1, 2025, Tesla shares closed at $263.80, marking a substantial decline from previous highs. Analysts predict further drops, with Wells Fargo setting a price target of $130 per share –– a potential 50% decrease from current levels. This decline is attributed to disappointing vehicle deliveries, declining earnings, and skepticism about future models.

Investing public pension funds in such a volatile company is not just fiscally irresponsible; it’s a disservice to the hardworking New Yorkers who rely on these pensions for retirement.

Donald Trump’s Assault on Immigrant Communities

President Donald Trump’s policies have consistently targeted immigrant communities, and his recent actions continue this harmful trend. The Trump administration’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals is a direct attack on families who have built their lives here. This move threatens to uproot thousands, tearing parents from children and employees from their jobs.

The Haitian community in Brooklyn contributes immensely to our cultural fabric and economy. Rescinding TPS not only endangers their livelihoods but also destabilizes the local businesses and services that rely on their participation. It’s an inhumane policy that disregards the fundamental values of our city and state.

The Dangerous Alliance Between Musk and Trump

More alarming is the burgeoning alliance between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter), has become a megaphone for far-right ideologies and disinformation. His open support for Trump’s policies, including anti-immigrant stances, aligns him with an agenda that seeks to marginalize and oppress communities of color and immigrants.

This partnership is not just political theater; it has real-world consequences. Musk’s amplification of Trump’s rhetoric fuels division and emboldens policies that harm our constituents. It’s an alliance that prioritizes personal gain over the well-being of everyday Americans.

Divestment: A Moral and Financial Imperative

Given these developments, it is imperative that New York State and City divest from Tesla and any Musk-affiliated enterprises. Continuing to invest in these entities is tantamount to endorsing their harmful actions and unstable financial practices. Our public funds should reflect our values –– supporting companies that respect worker rights, uphold ethical standards, and contribute positively to our communities.

As the first candidate for New York City Comptroller to call for such divestment, I stand firm in the belief that our investments must align with our commitment to justice and equity. We cannot, in good conscience, allow public dollars to support individuals and companies that actively work against the interests of our residents.

Standing in Solidarity with Our Communities

The Haitian community, along with all immigrant communities in New York, deserves our unwavering support. We must oppose policies and figures that threaten their stability and well-being. By divesting from Tesla and condemning the actions of Elon Musk and Donald Trump, we send a clear message: New York stands with its diverse communities, and we will not fund their oppression.

It’s time for our state and city to take a stand. Let’s align our investments with our values and protect the futures of all New Yorkers.
