This week, New Faces New Voices (NFNV)is holding its seventh annual three-day film festival, which will feature live screenings, filmmaker discussions, Q&As, exclusive meetups, and award presentations. The films will be presented at Regal Essex Crossing in Lower Manhattan from Tuesday, Sept. 23, to Thursday, Sep 25.

The festival highlights projects from BIPOC, female, LGBTQ, and disabled filmmakers who are often ignored by the mainstream. Each year, independent creators from across the U.S. and other countries take part in the festival.

Many of the films explore topics deeply rooted in culture and race. This year, one of the pieces that does so is “Africa In Me” from director Karma Bridges, daughter of rapper Ludacris, which is a personal narrative about Bridges’s connection to her African American and Nigerian cultural roots.

Another film, “Healing Powers” from director Victor Ilyukhin, tells the story of a woman on a journey to heal from past trauma through the transformative power of art.

More than $10,000 of in-kind production services, complimentary software, and subscriptions will be presented to winners on Thursday from Universal DCP, JMR Rentals, Bowery Film Festival, Screenblade, and International Screenwriters’ Association.

NFNW is a sister festival of Katra Film Series and the Katra Latinx Festival in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Katra was founded by Brooklynite Geoffrey Guerrero, an award-winning filmmaker and entrepreneur.

Tickets are available for purchase at squadup.com.
