The 57th NAACP Image Awards are set to take place this Saturday night in Los Angeles, shining a spotlight on Black excellence across film, television, music, and literature. The ceremony will be hosted by acclaimed actor and comedian Deon Cole, whose blend of sharp wit and cultural insight has made him a fan favorite.
Recognized as one of the most distinguished multicultural award shows in the world, the 57th NAACP Image Awards continues its tradition of excellence. The ceremony remains dedicated to uplifting values that inspire equality, justice, and progressive change, while highlighting artists and creators who remain committed to these principles.
“As a comedian, actor, and cultural icon, Deon Cole has consistently used his talent to entertain, uplift, and inspire. His humor, deep appreciation for the culture, and commitment to our community has cemented him as an entertainment legend,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “It is truly an honor to have him return as the host of this year’s 57th NAACP Image Awards.”
This year’s ceremony is centered around the theme: “We See You.” In a recent interview with the AmNews, Johnson explained that the theme is vital because Black culture is linked to American culture.
“When we highlight the diverse nature of the content, how dynamic the individuals and the content is, it tells Black America and the African diaspora, ‘we see you,’” he said.
Deon Cole echoed this sentiment, telling the AmNews that “camaraderie” is the defining characteristic that separates the Image Awards from other award shows
“It just seems like everybody there is family,” Cole remarked. “It’s like you just haven’t seen them in a while. It’s like being at a cookout.”
Cole, who intends to keep the energy high and the audience engaged, expressed his excitement for the broad range of categories this year. The film Sinners leads the pack with a staggering 18 nominations. Other high-profile nominees include actresses Teyana Taylor and Cynthia Erivo, alongside musical heavyweights Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, and Leon Thomas.
“I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of my friends and seeing them win,” Cole said. “What makes the NAACP Image Awards different is that we’re Black. Unapologetically Black. We’re going to have a good time.”
In the current social climate, Cole hopes the broadcast serves as a beacon for the next generation of creators. He views the show as a catalyst for innovation and artistic bravery.
“When people watch the show, I hope they get inspiration to go create, do things, and push the envelope,” he said. “Raise the bar on different projects and let your mind expand.”
While he refrained from predicting specific winners, Cole noted that the nomination itself is a career-defining milestone. “If you’re nominated, you’re a winner. For the rest of your life, you carry the title of an NAACP Image Award nominee.”
The NAACP Image Awards will air Saturday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. ET on BET and simulcast on CBS.
