The number of political resignations seems to increase each day. Within hours after California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell and a Texas Republican, Tony Gonzales, resigned, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer left the Trump cabinet with another position to fill.

On the heels of her departure, embattled Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, resigned on Tuesday, moments before the House Ethics Committee was set to consider whether to recommend she be expelled from Congress.

Will these sudden vacancies catch up with the recent spate of mass shootings or, on a less tragic note, the New York Mets’ losing streak?

On the one hand, I am talking about presumed malfeasance and moral turpitude among elected officials; on the other, a team’s inability to outscore its opponent. In both situations, the results are as baffling as the why and wherefore of the war in the Middle East.

Are the times we live in today any more troubling than similar circumstances in the past? Probably not, but that they are occurring with such rapid repetition does give you pause.

Of course, the Mets, we hope, will soon break out of the doldrums of defeat, and I wish I could say the same for the mass shootings and the elected officials who may or may not be guilty of the charges that force them from office.
