MTA documents show that bus maintainers and maintenance cleaners are responsible for keeping the fleet of buses operating safely and looking clean. Cleaners handle tasks like cleaning, fueling, and light maintenance. They are responsible for cleaning, sweeping, and washing buses, depots, and garages; operating and fueling buses; cleaning bus interiors; checking and topping off fluids such as oil, battery, and radiator fluids; moving refuse containers; and performing basic non-technical maintenance tasks.

Maintainers specialize in chassis and body repairs, and perform more complex diagnostics and repairs. Their duties include assisting with the maintenance, installation, inspection, testing, alteration, and repair of buses and electromechanical equipment. Tasks involve cleaning and lubricating bus parts, moving parts and equipment with tools like forklifts and hoists, measuring tire pressure and changing flat tires, checking and maintaining fluid levels, fueling buses, draining waste oil, sandblasting parts, driving buses and trucks, and other related work.

The starting hourly wage for these positions is around $19.03 and can rise to $31.71 after six years. Employees also receive night and weekend pay differentials, paid holidays, vacation time, sick leave, comprehensive medical benefits, and pension plans.
