The Tony nominations are out and Black stars are shining brightly. And it’s no wonder, with all of the Black professionals that are doing their thing on Broadway.
“Ragtime,” playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center (W. 65th Street), is up for numerous nominations, including Best Musical Revival; Joshua Henry for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and Nichelle Lewis for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical; and costume design, lighting design, projection design, sound design, direction of a musical, and choreography.

“August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” playing at the Barrymore Theatre (W. 47th Street) earned Ruben Santiago-Hudson a well-deserved nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. Paul Tazewell is nominated for Best Costume Design of a Play, Stacey Derosier for Best Lighting Design of a Play, and Justin Ellington for Best Sound Design of a Play. It is also up for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre.
A production earlier in the season of “Waiting for Godot” earned Brandon J. Dirden a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play.

“CATS: The Jellicle Ball,” playing at Studio 54 (W. 54th Street) truly received a lot of love in the nominations. It is nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, with theater legend Andre De Shields for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical; Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, Best Direction of a Musical; Omari Wiles and Arturo Lyons, choreography; Qween Jean, Best Costume Design of a Musical; Adam Honore, Best Lighting Design of a Musical; and Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical; and Best Orchestrations.
“Titanique,” playing at the Nederlander Theatre (W. 41st Street) is nominated for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical, with Layton Williams for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.
“Liberation,” nominated for Best Play, earned Whitney White a nomination for Best Direction of a Play and another well-deserved nomination for Qween Jean for best Costume Design of a Play.
The 79th Annual Tony Awards celebrating the 2025–2026 Broadway season will happen live on Sunday, June 7, at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by P!NK. The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards will broadcast LIVE to both coasts on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+* (8–11 p.m. ET/5–8 p.m. PT).
