The community came together at Riverside Church on May 30 to celebrate the life of Black liberation fighter Assata Shakur, who died on September 25, 2025, in Cuba, where she had been living since fleeing the United States in 1979.
Shakur was celebrated for her dedication to Black freedom and the cause of liberty for all people through song, poetry, and dance. A number of speakers were also on hand, including family and colleagues, to remember the person she was and what she meant.
