The New York Amsterdam News won three major awards last week from the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) at its Sneaker Ball and Awards Ceremony. The Oct. 23 event celebrated 50 years of outstanding journalism.
The AmNews received the award for Best Print Newspaper, the Gordon Parks Award for Excellence in Visual Media, and the Ed Bradley Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting.
AmNews contributor Shannon Chaffers’s Under the Gun series was recognized for excellence in investigative reporting. The three-part series explored how police efforts to reduce guns on the street disproportionately backfire and affect Black and Brown New Yorkers.
Editor-at-Large Damaso Reyes won for his 2025 visual piece, “In our city of islands, teaching open water swimming is a climate solution”
AmNews intern Sam Geronimo won the Emerging Student Journalist award.
“We’re really proud that NYABJ has recognized our work,” said AmNews Executive Editor Madison Gray. “Our team put in many hours and lots of hard work, so to be recognized like this by our colleagues means so much to us.”
Founded in 1976, NYABJ is a part of the National Association of Black Journalists, the world’s largest organization supporting journalists of color. NYABJ is a community that supports and motivates journalists of color who accurately and powerfully record the stories of the African Diaspora.
