Kathi Barber, founder of the African American Breastfeeding Alliance and author of The Black Woman’s Guide to Breastfeeding (Sourcebooks), shares these tips for breastfeeding success.
1. Prepare in Advance – Read as much as you can about breastfeeding before B-day (birth) comes. This includes books and brochures on how to breastfeed, pumping breastmilk, storing breastmilk, how to overcome breastfeeding challenges, nursing in public, etc.
2. Get Help – The more support you have during your breastfeeding experience, the better off you’ll be. It’s important to have your spouse/partner on-board with your choice to breastfeed. Studies have shown that the more support a woman has during breastfeeding increases her chances of breastfeeding longer and more successfully. As your OB for the number of a local breastfeeding support group and get the number of the hospital’s Lactation Consultant. Then, use those numbers when you need to!
3. Be Resolute – To have a good breastfeeding experience, it’s vital for you to resolve in your own mind that “I will succeed at breastfeeding.” If you are resolute in your desire to have a good breastfeeding experience then you will be more mentally fit to face any challenges–social or physical–that may come your way.
