U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, along with New York Civil Liberties Union and other legislators, pressed school officials to suspend a policy that will provide student’s personal information to military recruiters.

Rangel expressed his concern in a letter co-signed with 27 elected officials, NYCLU said in a press release.

In the letter, the legislators requested a 30-day comment period for students, parents, educators and others in the community to voice their opinions on the policy and suggest changes.

The letter sites the No Child Left Behind Act as a premise for its argument against the new policy from the Department of Education.

Under the No Child Left Behind act, recruiters are provided with student’s personal information. But parents and students have the ability under the act to keep certain information private.
