Mark Sanchez has shown flashes that he can be an excellent quarterback.

To maximize his potential, however, he has to have quality receivers to throw to. He has at least one in Jerricho Cotchery. After that is a mystery. David Clowney has shown that he can be effective. He’s among the leaders in receptions and yards in the preseason. But will that translate into the regular season?

As of right now, Chanci Stuckey is penciled in as Sanchez’ second receiver. A seventh-round pick, Stuckey showed promise last season, catching 32 passes with three touchdowns. His potential notwithstanding, the Jets can’t be 100 percent sold on him.

After Cotchery and Stuckey, the only other receiver on the roster with any real experience is Brad Smith. But he only has 53 career receptions. Marcus Henry (no relation to this writer) had an excellent day at practice on Thursday, catching two touchdown passes. But he is in a dogfight with Wallace Wright and Britt Davis for the fifth and sixth receiver position. He could end up on the practice squad for the second straight season.

That should give you an idea of what Sanchez has to look forward to. Frankly, it’s not enough. Cotchery is a solid receiver. But not a number one game-breaking type. Clowney has only done it in the preseason, while Stuckey has yet to be let loose.

Rex Ryan admitted the final wide receiver spot is likely to be up for grabs in the team’s final preseason game against the Eagles Thursday, September 3.

“They’ve all had their moments,” Ryan said. “Has anybody really stepped out and played better than the rest of them? I’m not so sure of that right now, but again, as you guys know these last two preseason games, we’re going to find out.”

For Henry, it’s all about having a good feel for the offense and know where to be and what to do.

“[Thursday] was one of my better days,” said Henry. “It’s all about getting more comfortable. The offense is really the same. I just have to keep working at it.”

He’ll get two more chances to impress. The next opportunity will be Saturday (August 29) against the Giants.
