We are coming closer and closer to the time when the primary elections will be over and the final count before the convention begins on the Democratic side of the tent. While the Democratic side of the tent means more for Black Americans than it does on the Republican side, it is still worthy that we note and understand what is happening with that process.
Coming up on this week, we have seen the phenomenon of Senator Barack Obama explode upon the horizon and leave us breathless with the idea that he may indeed become President of the United States. But still, while soaring in a euphoria, we cannot believe, not even in our wildest dreams, when each day and every minute brings to us something of particular note or fear.
We have now come to the State of West Virginia, where Barack Obama gets trounced. It is clear that neither Barack Obama nor Hillary Clinton will get the majorities that they need to be declared winner of the delegate count that brings one to merit being named the candidate for the Democrat Party.
Senator Obama, after the contest in West Virginia, is still substantially ahead in all areas that are counted:delegates, super delegates, popular votes et al. In words not too difficult to understand, he is the winner going into the last phase of the Democratic primaries.
Had anyone else been running, it seems, other than Black Barack Obama and white Hillary Clinton against each other in a white bread nation, the election would have been called because it is clear by now that neither of them has the kind of majorities required to be deemed the winner of the primary fight. Yet, Senator Clinton is hanging in, desperately raising money and telling Senator Barack Obama and everyone else in the world who will listen that they are hanging in, that they are not going to give up nor back out, no matter what happens in the last phases of the primaries.
For many Democrats this is scary. Scary because it is believed by many that Democrats will injure themselves so much in the eyes of the public by the bickering, the anger, the false charges, etc. that they will give John McCain a coasting ride to the Presidency because Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have made more of an effort to kill each other off than they have trying to site the real reasons why Senator John McCain nor any other Republican should have a free ride to the Presidency and a virtual third term for George W. Bush.
Yet, no one seems to listen. Crazy people on Hillary Clinton’s side insist that she can still win, no matter what the current numbers say and no matter what the Democratic National Committee does about the problem of seating Michigan and Florida at convention, although they clearly disobeyed a rule that they were privy to that forbade their taking a position in the primary schedule ahead of all the other states.
Florida and Michigan moved ahead of the pack because they clearly believed that they would have more influence and make more money for the political machine if they decided to go out of turn. They were chastised by the Democratic National Committee, fairly done so, and were told that their votes would not count and/or that their delegates would not be seated because the vote was improper.
Mind you, all the delegations had agreed to this rule laid down by the Democratic National Committee thinking that this “punishment” would be enough to discipline the members of the Democratic Party participating in the primary elections. It probably would have been enough, too, unless some maverick, riding on a white horse with an interracial background and superb credentials and an excellent American education had not made the ride out of the sunset and declared himself eligible to become President of the United States and had much of America buy it.
At first it was unique that a Black man with enough money, background and backing had appeared on the scene to make such a challenge. At first it was unique and worthy of some comment, but not really serious. How could it be? Senator Barack Obama was Black. How could he beat out almost a dozen white men and a white woman in order to get the nod to become the Democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States? But low and behold, he did. Thus, an American dilemma sets in that will, before too many sunsets, glorify America by producing a white woman President of the United States or a Black man President of the United States.
The people of this country–with its miserable history of segregation, discrimination and government-sponsored terror against Blacks and women (one physical and one mental)–will have to answer for what happens to the future of this country.
The decision must be made to conduct the primary as well as the general election fair and just employing all the principles that appear in the Constitution of the United States.
Until that time comes for the leaders of America to make that decision, the attempt to kill off one or both–Senator Obama and Senator Clinton–must cease and the suggestion by George McGovern that they appear for the next several weeks until the primary season is over to spell out their positions on the issues that America cares about without malice toward each other or any attempt to kill the other off with hatred, greed or racism must come into play.
While this may be too much to ask for, it is too little to demand; for it is our belief that the very future of America rests on the people of this country being able to understand that it must be Blacks, whites and browns together in America or no one at all.
Must we learn the hard way how to destroy the only major democracy left in the world? We wonder and we fear.
