As things appear to get worse for Congressman Anthony Weiner, President Barack Obama has now joined the chorus of those advising the Queens congressman to step down after more racy photos of Weiner surface.
Speaking on the Today Show on NBC, Obama said during an interview with Ann Curry that if he were in Weiner’s shoes, he’d call it quits.
“I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign,” Obama said. “I think he’s embarrassed himself, he’s acknowledged that, he’s embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately there’s going to be a decision for him and his constituents.”
The President also called Weiner’s acts a “distraction” and “inappropriate” while talking to reporters on Air Force One. No word on whether or not Obama and Weiner have spoken to each other about the scandal.
Obama joins several high ranking Democrats who are advising Weiner to step down including Deomcratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
It’s been a little over a week since Weiner admitted that he sent explicit pictures of himself and engaged in “sexting” with six women on the Internet. Weiner also reportedly had contact with a 17-year-old girl but did not participate in any inappropriate conversation with the teen.
On Sunday more photos were released by gossip website TMZ of Weiner taking explicit photos of himself in the House gym in Washington. The new photos raise questions on whether or not Weiner violated any rules by using the gym to take the photos.
In an announcement on Friday, officials from Weiner’s camp said that the congressman is seeking professional treatment and is not stepping down.
