It was a violent and deadly Fourth of July holiday weekend in Newark. Three people were killed, including an off-duty corrections officer, and at least three others were seriously injured in a rash of shootings across the Brick City.
Officials have confirmed that the victim in the first shooting was Katrina Owens, a 37-year-old corrections officer from South Brunswick, N.J. She was shot to death at a family barbecue on Columbia Avenue around midnight on Monday. Owens, a married mother of three, had been with the state corrections department since 2003 and was a guard at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
The second shooting occurred about 30 minutes later on the 100 block of Elizabeth Avenue. One person was shot. Another incident took place around the same time on the 300 block of Osborne Terrace, where two people were shot. The last incident was reported when a victim walked into Beth Israel hospital in Newark with a gunshot wound.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office said all the shooting incidences appear to be unrelated; however, an extensive investigation is being conducted into all of the shootings. At this time, no one has been arrested in any of the cases.
