A horrific assault on an 11-month-old baby girl on Tuesday has shocked and outraged a neighborhood in Irvington, as the child’s 19-year-old mother and 15-year-old boyfriend have been arrested and charged with the near fatal assault.
The child, named Madison, was taken to University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) on Tuesday after police responded to an emergency call at a residence. Once they arrived, they found the child unresponsive and seriously injured. The child’s mother, Crystal Spearman, was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Meanwhile, the 15-year-old minor was charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
According to police reports, family members said Spearman, her boyfriend and the child were in a room in the residence and began arguing. Spearman ran out of the room and told them to call 911. As of Wednesday morning, the child was on a respirator, barely clinging to life. Doctors said she suffered a fractured arm and leg and severe trauma to her head and internal organs.
“What a horrible thing to happen,” said one Irvington resident. “How could anyone do such a terrible thing to a baby?!”
One blogger wrote, “How in the hell is a 19-year-old with a 15-year-old-isn’t that rape?”
And finally, one blogger said, “Some people don’t need to have children!”
