UFT President Michael Mulgrew visited P.S. 51 in his first school visit of the new school year. The Bronx school is currently dealing with new information that it was infested with cancer-causing chemicals in August. The discovery was made in January, igniting anger among parents, teachers and members of the community.
Mulgrew’s visit included assuring teachers that the union was involved in providing “environmental and occupational physician consultation” for teachers and staff who worked at the school. The union is also calling for the city and state health departments to create a registry, public health assessment and medical monitoring mechanism for students who attended the school, according to the UFT website. The school has been moved to another building.
