New York City council members are calling on the mayor to create oversight of the New York City Police Department. Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, State Sen. Eric Adams and other politicians want Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form an independent commission in light of new information on police ticket fixing charges, alleged investigative tactics in Muslim places of worship and mounting disapproval of stop and frisk policies.
City Councilman Eric Adam said in a statement, “In light of the recent police scandals, it is imperative that a commission be created so that the integrity of the New York City Police Department can be restored. I enjoin Mayor Bloomberg to follow the path of his predecessors, who created the Knapp and Mollen Commissions to address alleged police corruption within New York City. The establishment of a commission is a ‘win-win’ for all. It will restore the faith of the general public in the NYPD and will allow the thousands of stellar police personnel to hold their heads high.”
