Monroe College and Saunders High School are teaming up for a high-flying high school basketball triple-header to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. On Saturday, Jan. 7, beginning at 3 p.m., six of Westchester’s best high school boys basketball teams will take to the court at the gorgeous new Monroe Athletic Complex (MAC) in New Rochelle, N.Y., for “Hoops for a Cure,” with all proceeds from admission, concessions, T-shirts, raffles, etc., going to the charity.
“This is what it’s all about,” said Saunders coach Anthony Nicodemo, whose 9-year-old godson is diabetic. “We’ve put this partnership together with Monroe to not only try to have an impact on a disease that affects millions, but also to give the youngsters who play great basketball in Westchester a chance to showcase their talents in front of a big crowd on a first-class college court.”
“The Monroe Mustangs are proud to support this amazing event,” said Director of Sports Development and Information Gary Axelbank. “We want local school teams and community groups to feel at home at the MAC, and we’re especially pleased to be opening our doors for something that benefits us all.”
In the first game, two top teams, Tuckahoe and Blind Brook, will go at it. Then at 5 p.m., Scarsdale and New Rochelle will renew their natural rivalry. At 7 p.m., Eastchester will tip off against the host team Saunders. For ticket information, call (914) 740-6758 or (914) 299-1664.
The Monroe College Athletic Complex is the home court for the NJCAA Division I No. 1-ranked Monroe Mustangs, the NJCAA Division II women’s defending national champion Mustangs and the Junior Huguenots, New Rochelle’s local youth teams. Monroe recently hosted the Trinity School for a meet-and-greet, and Blessed Sacrament and Hallen played a game at the MAC. On Feb. 4, Peekskill will play Albany Academy in the first game of a high school-college triple-header.
