Who are opera’s Spunky Old Broads? One took off all her clothes to obtain her heart’s desire! Another threw a baby into the fire! Yet another seduced a French corporal! Working as a team, three of them slew a dragon and tormented two seekers of truth! Let’s just say they are women with a big personality and they can’t wait to strut their “stuff”. Join us as the familiar and several less familiar ladies of opera are presented through their signature arias and scenes. The program will feature principal singers from past Chelsea Opera productions and special guests including dramatic soprano Maria Russo and dramatic mezzo soprano Eugenie Grunewald. Among the “Spunky Broads” represented are Turandot (Puccini), Joan of Arc (The Maid of Orleans/Tchaikovsky), Baba (The Rake’s Progress/Stravinsky), Ma Joad (The Grapes of Wrath/Gordon), Three Ladies (Die Zauberflote/Mozart), Older Alyce (Glory Denied/Cipullo), Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia/Britten), Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro/Mozart), and Azucena (Il Trovatore/ Verdi).
