The Special appointed prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case, Angela Corey, made the decision Monday not to involve a grand jury in the decision making process that will decide wether or not the Trayvon Martin case will go to trial.
Martin a 17-year-old was shot and killed in a gated community in Sanford, Fl. by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26.”The decision should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case” said Corey in a press release. “From the moment she was assigned, Ms. Corey noted she may not need a Grand Jury.” Florida State Attorney Norm Wolfinger has scheduled the grand jury to assemble by former on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Sanford, Fla. Then on March 22, Governor Rick Scott appointed Angela Corey as the Special Prosecutor for the case.
In a press release on March 30, Art Rocker, chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of the state of Florida said,” In the past she has been an advocate for law enforcers and she will paint Trayvon Martin like he is a menace to Florida’s society. She has no concern for a Black Teenager. She has proven this with her past record by convicting numerous Black Teenagers. Angela Corey is a hired gun for ‘Stand your Ground’, a far right tactic that was introduced by the KKK and Jim Crow in the past.”
Now the decision to hold, or not to hold a trial for Zimmerman for the murder of Martin up to Corey. Many have pointed to the media attention as the reason Corey decided not to convene a grand jury, as the jurors themselves would already be biased
Also, For those who wanted the information about this case to be open to the public the decision not to have a grand jury is a releaf, as the proceedings of a grand jury would have been closed to the public.
