Around and About NYC: City Parks celebrates Jimi, kicks off SummerStage (37585)

The annual SummerStage gala, which launches the SummerStage season in New York City, is set to take place on Tuesday, June 5 at the Rumsey Playfield at 72nd Street in Central Park. The official announcement of the gala was made by City Parks Foundation (CPF), the independent nonprofit organization that organizes park programming throughout the five boroughs of the city.

The SummerStage gala is a fundraiser that supports the year-round programming of CPF. This year’s gala will pay homage to the music of Jimi Hendrix and feature the legendary guitarist and musician’s songs, which will be performed by a diverse group of brilliant musical legends and today’s rising stars.

Produced by Michael Dorf Presents and City Winery, the concert will present a fascinating mix of soul, funk, bossa nova, jazz and folk singers in a unique evening of performances that will capture the essence and soul of the numerous classics from Hendrix’s musical catalog.

The tribute concert will feature Bebel Gilberto, G. Love & Special Sauce, Amel Larrieux, the Roots, John Scofield, Keller Williams and other special guests. The house band will be Soulive.

Bleacher seats for the concert are available starting at $50. For those who purchase tables, there will be a cocktail party beginning at 6 p.m. in the pergola area. For tables of 10, dinner will be provided starting at 7 p.m. The concert will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 for those who purchased bleacher tickets.

SummerStage, produced by CPF, is New York’s largest free performing arts festival, bringing over 110 free performances to 18 parks throughout the five boroughs. Performances range from American pop, Latin and world music to dance, comedy and theater. This season, innovative artists from over 15 countries will perform at SummerStage, “presenting the best of what is happening globally in the arts world as well as in the heart of the city.”

Since its inception 27 years ago, more than 6 million people from New York City and around the world have enjoyed SummerStage.

In addition to this season’s lineup, CPF has commissioned a number of artists to create four unique programs that will premiere at SummerStage. Incorporating music, dance and theater disciplines, these works will feature some of the most brilliant emerging artists, as well as several celebrated ones, all of which is in keeping with SummerStage’s commitment to “presenting the best artists from around the world and playing an active role in promoting artists’ creativity.”
