On Saturday, July 7, hundreds of Nigerians gathered at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Long Island, to enjoy an annual cookout. The event, originally hosted by the Edo Organization of New York City, draws people from all walks of life, from elders to young people.

One of the group’s leading members, Ogieva Obadiaru, told the AmNews, “We come here with our families to share time together, see old friends and build up our community for the young people. We want to make sure that the youth keep ties with our culture and develop their interest in building on it.”
