SCLC Annual Convention of fighting for what's RIGHT (36576)

The National Board of Directors of the National Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) voted to hold the group’s annual national convention in (Lake Mary) Sanford , FL, on July 20-21, 2012.

“This was a decision based on the murder of Florida teen Trayvon Martin along with the many other deaths of people who have died at the hands of Florida Law enforcement,” said Art Rocker, Chairman of Florida SCLC State Unit. Other issues that SCLC has includes the many claimants of the under-served people in the Gulf Coast States of FL, MS, AL, LA and TX who have yet to receive their claim payments from BP and the thousands of jobs lost due to the oil spill of April 2010.

Dating back to the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, is when the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) was carried out. The late great Martin Luther King Jr served as the president and Ralph David Abernathy served as the Program Director. From there on boycotts dispersed throughout the south which brought 60 persons from 10 states to bring forth and declare the founding of the Southern Leadership Conference on Transportation and Nonviolent Integration. But later the organization name was shortened to Southern Leadership Conference.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr served as the president from 1957 to 1968, his son Martin Luther King III served as the president from 1997 to 2004. The current president is Reverend Byron Clay serving from February 2009 to present.

Despite the setbacks Rocker says the SCLU ” have been the incubator of Civil Rights leaders all over the country.” SCLC has the determination to move forward and still fight for the causes of Civil Rights. “We will continue to be like Moses knowing and following the vision and taking the crisis inside of the family of SCLC or the outside forces who are crying over our successes.”
