“Cruz,” yelled the crowd of hundreds of people who waited hours to see the New York Giants’ single-season record-breaking receiver as he arrived at Queens Center Mall for a July 20 book signing.

The first 500 fans received a printed photo of Victor Cruz and an autographed copy of his new memoir, “Victor Cruz: Out of the Blue,” which details his personal story of numerous setbacks.

“I just want them to be inspired, to understand that I’m a kid who came from a small town. It was easy for people to kind of judge and say, ‘He’s not going to make it out or he can’t make it out’ because there weren’t many of us who were able to make it out of Paterson, N.J. I just want them to be inspired and know, through my story, they can conquer and do whatever they want,” Cruz said.

Not only did Cruz break the Giants’ season record for most receiving yards, he also played a vital role in leading his team to its fourth Super Bowl championship last year.

“That was just the icing on the cake,” Cruz said, pointing out how his success last season made it hard to highlight his favorite moments of his breakout year.

The book signing was the second event hosted by Time Warner Cable as part of the company’s “Enjoy Queens Better” campaign.
