MORE THAN 2,000 BACKPACKS GIVEN TO STUDENTS IN BROOKLYN

Thousands of underserved students in Brooklyn started the school year off with the help of a backpack filled with school supplies. The NAACP chapter in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn borough president’s office and New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott handed out backpacks in an ongoing effort to support and encourage students to stay in school. The backpacks were distributed at a press conference and rally on Aug. 22. The program is in its sixth year and is a long-standing tradition of the Brooklyn NAACP and its partners.
