I am sure that you’ve heard of the biblical adventure of Daniel in the lion’s den. As you know, the lion did not feast on Daniel. Well, before Daniel wound up with the lion, he and his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, were chosen by the Babylonian king his Nebuchadnezzar, to be trained to serve in his place. In fact, this old king also gave them the option to eat and drink the high-calorie fatty foods and wine from his own table.

Daniel and his colleagues were not too cool about eating all of the “good stuff” that clogs up the arteries. He suggested to his teacher that they would prefer to have a diet of vegetables and water. The teacher, however, after hearing about this low-calorie meal, was afraid that they would be unhealthy and the gluttonous king would punish him.

Finally, Daniel persuaded the teacher to allow them 10 days and he would see the difference. At the end of that time, Daniel and his friends were not only the picture of health, but they were smarter too.

Hey, parents, is this not a lesson you should be following? Maybe you need to feed your little ones a diet of more vegetables and less meat. In fact, we all would do much better if we would follow the so-called Mediterranean diet. The diet, which consists of small amounts of meat, fish with scales, olive oil, beans, garlic, leeks, lentils, olives and onions and fruits such as apples, melons, grapes, organic raisins, pomegranates and apricots, will ensure healthy arteries.

Occasionally, a little wine with dinner will not hurt. The diet should also consist of wonderful grains such as barley, millet, spelt, oats and wheat. Dairy products, which would include yogurt, curds and low-fat milk, would give you an enriched source of calcium. This diet also calls for honey instead of sugar and an ample amount of pistachio nuts and almonds.

Energizing your cooking with spices, caraway seeds, coriander and cumin, along with wine vinegar, mint and mustard, will also excite your palate. For example, a breakfast should consist of a slice of seven-grain bread, a piece of fresh fruit and some yogurt. A recommended lunch could consist of homemade soup like lentil and a serving of pasta and brown rice smothered with vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and peppers.

I am strongly suggesting that we get away from all the fatty soul food and adopt Daniel’s diet, which will not only allow us to live longer, but will also surely put us in the good graces of Daniel himself when we get to heaven!

As you may remember, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did not fry when Nebuchadnezzar put them in the fiery furnace. This indicates that they were God’s chosen people and they obeyed his teachings
