The race to get gas in the city during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is getting a little easier. Over the last several days lines at gas stations across the northeast have been long going for several blocks in the city with major delays in the city getting fuel.

The shortage has been blamed on refineries being closed, pumping stations with no electricity and some terminals in the region have been closed. The city has been working with the Coast Guard and the Port Authority to unlock a gasoline barge that had been stuck in the port. It has now gone up the Hudson to Newburgh, where it will unload about 64,000 barrels of gasoline.

Even with all of those issues, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that gas is coming to the city and motorists will be able to fuel their cars. Residents who have lost electricity will also be able to put gas in generators.

“The bottom line is that the gasoline system is getting back on its feet,” he said. “We can expect some lags in how quickly it improves, but I think by Monday when people stop driving as much and start taking mass transit, that will be another thing. And these delays due to storms have happened before. They spring up very quickly and they go away very quickly.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that temporary fuel trucks will be deployed in key locations in New York City and Long Island in order to help provide gas to emergency vehicles and the general public.

The trucks are provided by the U.S. Department of Defense at the direction of President Barack Obama and are being deployed in coordination with the New York National Guard at the direction of the Governor.

The 5,000 gallon trucks will be deployed throughout the morning and there are an additional 150,000 gallons of fuel available to restock the trucks throughout the day. There is a 10 gallon limit per vehicle. Cars can fill up directly off of the truck.
